THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

The Egadi group of island is extremely interesting in terms of nature and landscape, and for this reason the Sicilian Region has made the three main islands and the two islets of Formica and Maraone protected areas. The whole archipelago, indeed, is a nature and marine reserve, and there is protection for the forests and landscape.

All this being done not only because of the intrinsic importance of the single islands in term of landscape and environment, but also because so far they have been spared by irresponsible building, the proliferation of roads and hotel complex, excessive human settlement, sea pollution, ect.

The island are intact and very beautiful in their respective connotation-landscape, marine environment-and can offer-all of theme-great and varied opportunitis for the enjoyment of more or less uncontaminated places.

So they are real paradises for people who love the sea, whether scuba divers or not, for those who love bird watching, trekking, botany,or, much more simply, for all those who want to spend a "different"holiday, more stimulating and at once quieter.

The total absence of tarmac roads on Marettimo an Levanzo, and the fact that there are only four hotels (on Favignana and Levanzo), two tourist villages (Favignana) - thought you can stay at private houses - is therefore not to be seen as a limitation by those who go to the Egadi, but, on the contrary, as a - magnificent - gift from the hospitable people, who have succeded in preserving their environment intact and, often, absolutely unspoilt.
